The 2018 provisional Tuolumne River release schedule is now available.

Note that the release drops to 700 cfs starting August 6.  This is because the Holm Powerhouse rehabilitation project will limit generation to only one unit from August 6 onward.  Note though that they could move the date up, so keep watching this space for updates.

For your interest: the Holm Powerhouse rehabilitation project is doing a bunch of badly-needed maintenance work over a long period.  They're refurbishing or replacing valves, exciters, control panels ... lots of stuff, it's a major overhaul.  So it's a bummer we have low flows from August 6 onward, however turns out we're lucky to have any releases - originally they thought they'd have to switch the river off for the season.

The work is expected to be complete in the first half of next year.  Thereafter we can expect much more reliable releases for a long while.

Hetch Hetchy Water and Power reports today as follows:

"We will be doing some valve commissioning at Cherry Lake this week.  April 24, 25 and 26 will see large fluctuations in releases from Cherry Valley Dam, with flows possibly raising from 10 cfs to 2500 cfs and back down within hours.  The schedule is not set – please plan for significant fluctuations in streamflows.

An update later this week will detail releases from Hetchy and the Powerhouses."

Hetch Hetchy Water and Power reports today as follows:

"We will be commissioning valves at Cherry Lake this Friday, May 4.  Our current plan is to start at 7-8AM, and ramp up releases from Cherry Valley Dam to 2500 cfs.  We will then stay at 2500 cfs for an hour or 2, then ramp down.  I anticipate hitting peak releases sometime between 11AM and 1PM, and returning to minimum releases (5cfs) by 2PM to 4PM.  Timing may vary if issues arise with the valve operation.

During this commissioning, HPH will be at 1000 cfs, Hetchy releases are 3000 cfs, KPH releases are 500 cfs and Eleanor will be releasing 250 cfs.  Total Tuolumne releases will hit as high as 7250 cfs while we are at max releases from Cherry."

Hetch Hetchy Water and Power reports as follows:

"We are planning a set of valve moves at Hetch Hetchy this weekend.  On Sunday, we will be increasing Hetchy releases from 2500 cfs to 4100 cfs from 10am to 2pm.  At 2pm we will drop releases to 3100 cfs.  Monday we plan on dropping further to 2300 cfs.  Holm draft will stay at 1000 cfs, and kirkwood spill at 500 cfs.  Lake Eleanor is full and spilling.  Currently 300 cfs, may increase to 500 this weekend. "

"Hetchy Dam Releases will drop through the week, targeting 1000 cfs by end of week.

Holm draft will stay at 1000 cfs, and Kirkwood spill at 500 cfs.

Been away from my computer. Hetch Hetchy Water and Power reported on May 17 (a week ago) as follows:

"Some changes to releases next week.

1.  Hetchy releases from the dam are ramping down to 500 cfs over the course of the next 4 days.  We will maintain 500 cfs through next week

2.  HPH releases will drop to 200 cfs starting Monday

3.  KPH releases will maintain at 500 cfs

4.  Eleanor is expected to cease spilling this weekend - releases should drop to 20 cfs.

5.  MPH Spill into Moccasin Creek will maintain at 100-200 cfs

Total upcountry releases will remain above 1200 cfs through the week."

Been away from my computer. Hetch Hetchy Water and Power gave an update on May 18 (a week ago) as follows:

"We have been given directives to adjust our HPH operations due to impacts on the Bulk Electric System over the past few days.  This has been resulting in a reduction in generation from HPH as requested by the California Independent System Operator.  Today's releases from HPH were reduced by ~225 cfs.  Other reductions and changes should be anticipated - but not as easily forecasted.  Be prepared for variations in flows throughout your trips this weekend.

Our current operational release forecast would result in flows below the confluence of the Tuolumne and Cherry Creek to remain in the 2100-2700 range for the weekend, as outlined in the previous post.  However if generation reductions are required I expect flows to remain above the 1600-1700 cfs range

These variations are typically for a couple of hours at time, but please be aware of variable flow conditions."
