California - Pit 5 August recreational releases are cancelled and will be rescheduled. The Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) Pit 5 recreational releases scheduled for August 8 & 9 are cancelled due to power grid thresholds required by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO). In order to provide recreational releases on Pit 5, PG&E must be able to provide peak load plus a 15% reserve margin from other generation sources. This metric is referred to as Resource Adequacy and dates back to the 2001 California energy crisis when the California Public Utilities Commission created the program to ensure reliability in the State’s power grid.
Unfortunately, an unforeseen forced outage and a planned outage on Pit 7 make it impossible for PG&E to meet the Resource Adequacy requirement. Therefore, recreational flows must be rescheduled. PG&E still anticipates providing recreational flow for PIT 5 on September 12 & 13 and American Whitewater will work on make-up days for August. Stay tuned we will post the new dates once they are confirmed on our release calendar: https://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/Release/view/?

Pacific Gas & Electric has confirmed makeup dates for the Pit 5 scheduled releases for the weekend of October 17th & 18th at 1500 cfs. These flows will run concurrent with the Pit 1 releases scheduled that same weekend. A reminder, as of today that the September 12th & 13th recreational flows are still on the Pit 5 Calendar.
