We were coming back from skiing today and stopped to check out the river at Sweetbriar (Just below Castella). Just above Sweetbriar, at the top of the right turn that takes you into Chandler's rapid (and by the cabins at Sweetbriar) there is a large log that appears to span the river. At today's flows (3500'ish) it looked like you could maybe "boof" the log. However, at lower flows (where this river is run usually), this log would block access. Be very careful if you're doing the Soda Creek to Sims (through Mears Falls) run this year.

I was up in the Sweetbriar area today (02/01/06), so checked to see if the log is still there. It is. It does completely span the river. In addition, there are branches sticking up from the log (so, wonder what's underneath?). The log is about 1/4 mile below the bridge at Castella, just after a left turn, and in the middle of a wave train, making for few (or maybe none) eddies to catch if you enter the rapid. On River left, near the butt of the log, is a bluish shed, and that can be seen easily from upstream (if you're looking). Take out on the right side, before the rapid kicks in, and portage on that side. Easy enough portage (for a kayak, anyway). This thing could be a killer, so be careful.

Went by Sweetbriar to check out the log again (It's my Winter project, I guess) after the high flows we've had recently. Looks like the log is at least mostly gone. There's still a log (looked smaller) hooked to the left bank sticking out a ways, but at today's flows (6200ish) there was plenty of room on the right to avoid it. I think that at lower flows it should not be a problem, either. There's sure a lot of big logs scattered around on the shore, though, so scout anything if unsure.

The tree was still there on 5/13. At current flows it is still easy to miss on the right. Heard a story of a raft hitting the tree last weekend because they saw it too late. Everyone got dumped and they had to release air pressure to get the raft off it. At these higher flows, you need to look for this and prepare in advance.

i paddled dunsmuir to sweetbriar yesterday evening (a pleasant summer solstice paddle) and encountered no log in any major channels along the way. i did see one log across a minor channel (river left) a mile or so above sweetbriar, but if you remain in the main right-hand channel, it is a non-issue. in any event, it was very obvious and avoidable.
