5/10/207 - The uppermost section of the Cherry Run will become less available during the next 2 weeks due to water conservation while trying to fill Cherry Reservoir and compensatory releases at Early Intake to manage Hetch Hetchy reservoir storage increases. HHWP will combine flows from the two branches to meet the target flow of approximately 1100 cfs at Meral's Pool during the scheduled release dates and times.

The warm weather early this week has accelerated reservoir filling and produced releases to control reservoir levels.

Releases of about 970 cfs from Holm PH to Cherry Creek are likely to occur during daylight hours from now through Tuesday 5/15. Releases for boating are scheduled for Wed. and Thurs, 5/16 & 17, and flows may be extended beyond the normal times but are not guaranteed.

Flows of about 350 cfs are now occurring below Early Intake, and flow will increase to about 900 cfs on Sunday 5/13 about 9 am. These additional releases will continue through about Thursday 5/17, and perhaps longer.

From Hetch Hetchy Water & Power Operations Manager...

Cherry and Eleanor are full and modest spills will occur there for the next 3-5 days. Flow below Holm PH on Cherry Creek will be in the 1100 cfs range continuous through the weekend and begin to taper off at night next week (5/21).

Flow at Early Intake is currently about 900 cfs and will rise midafternoon Friday 5/18 and by Friday evening will be about 1500 cfs. Flow will rise to about 1900 cfs mid-afternoon on Saturday. Flow will vary again Sunday or Monday, but will stay between 1500 and 2500 cfs from Sunday through at least Thursday 5/24.

The 4-hr scheduled flows start 5/25 through 5/31 to provide recreational opportunity at Lumsden put-in starting about 9 am. It is likely flows will extend longer during at least part of this time and be higher than the normal 1100 cfs, but no guarantees.

If the Tuolumne is maintained at 1,100 cfs from 7 am to 11 am, what flow is maintained after 11am? Does anyone know how many hours is takes for the drop to appear at Meral's Pool?

Thanks!

You can get a good idea by studying the graph for Holm Powerhouse. Right now it's hardly dropping at all (from about 1100 cfs to about 950 cfs). Later in the season (when they're not scrambling to make reservoir space for snowmelt) the drop will be much more significant - usually dropping to around 400 cfs for the remaining daylight hours, though that's just what they usually do - they can drop it less or more if they need to.

The travel time is flow dependent, but as a nice round number assume it takes 2 hours for the drop to appear at Meral's Pool.

Note that the scheduled releases are at Holm Powerhouse. Currently even more water than that is coming down from Early Intake, and that gets added to the Holm Powerhouse flow. So be sure to check the flows at Mushroom for the Cherry Creek run, or Meral's Pool for the Lower T, to see what flows you'll be paddling on. Graphs for all of these locations are available on Dreamflows, either by clicking through to the graph from the reports, or clicking on the "Graphs" link at the bottom of any Dreamflows page and selecting your location of interest.
