The USGS is planning to discontinue to Salmon River at Somes Bar gauge on October 1, 2014. That means no more flow reading for the Salmon River! This gauge has been in service since 1911, making it one of the longest continuously operating gauges in the country. Concerned boaters should call the USGS Redding Field Office at 530-246-5282.

Here's the news release from the Salmon River Restoration Council about this:

One of the longest continuously operating river flow gauges in the United States, the Salmon River flow gauge near Somes Bar is scheduled to be discontinued on October 1, 2014 unless a new source of funding is obtained to continue its operation. The United States Geological Survey's Redding Office maintains that gauge. In service since almost continuously since October 1911, the gauge collects flow data on the mainstem Salmon River near its mouth, providing an essential quantitative measure of water volume and an important indirect indicator of snowpack, water quality, and fisheries health. With over 100 years of accrued data, the data set is statistically significant for determining trends in river flow and allows water years to be compared and forecasted. For more information on the pending discontinuation of USGS gauge #11522500, please contact the USGS Redding Field Office at 530-246-5282.

For most boaters, the Salmon River involves a healthy commute. Since it is a free-flowing river, having flow information is important before departing on a trip as well as for safety and planning. It would be a big loss to no longer have flow information.

Bureau of Reclamation stepped in and paid USGS to operate the Salmon River gauge for one year. This has happened before. Obviously, USGS just needs to get their budgeting and priorities set right so this gauge isn't continually under the gun. It is the best representative flow gauge on a free-flowing river in Northern CA with over a century of flow data.
