There is a huge tree stuck in a ledge hole on river left 1/4 mile downstream of Surprise rapid on the South Fork of the Smith river. This makes swims at surprise especially dngerous. At higher flows the tree is almost completely invisible from upsteam. Run right to avoid. If you think there is any possibility of swimming upsteam, plan on portaging.

This hazard warning was deleted a few days ago, presumably by madmanh20, so presumably this hazard has gone. But, I've restored it since I want to keep a history of what happened. If anyone knows the status of this hazard, please post it here, and if it's gone I'll move the topic to Archive.

Aida Parkinson of Redwood National and State Parks reports as follows: "You requested information on the strainer on the SF Smith below Surprise Rapid. It was actually gone at the next high flow after last April but it definitely wasn't there in December 2006 or on either February 17th or the 20th, 2007."
