- Dec 1, 2022:
- Stopped reporting estimated river flow for the California gauge site Kern - Below Democrat,
and started reporting actual river flow (from a physical gauge) in its place.
The new (replacement) gauge has the same name:
- Kern - Below Democrat
Thanks to Southern California Edison for providing this realtime gauge data.
- Sep 13, 2022:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Utah site:
- Provo - Near Woodland
- Sep 4, 2022:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Oregon site:
- White - Below Tygh Valley
- Sep 3, 2022:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Nevada sites:
- Truckee - Near Mogul
- Truckee - Near Nixon
Thanks to Charles Albright for providing great information about both runs.
- Apr 11, 2022:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California sites:
- Mi. American - Above Middle Fork PH
- Mi. American - Below Interbay Dam
- Mi. American - Above Oxbow Reservoir
- Rubicon - Above Hell Hole Reservoir
- Apr 10, 2022:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California sites:
- Dry Meadow Creek - Above Kern River
- Brush Creek - Above Kern River
Note that both of these virtual sites give only Low/Good/High levels. They're intended to pique your interest and give an idea when these creeks might be flowing. Suggest you call around before actually driving there.
- Apr 9, 2022:
- Stopped reporting estimated river flow for the California gauge site No. Mi. American - At Mosquito Ridge Rd,
and started reporting actual river flow (from a physical gauge) in its place.
The new (replacement) gauge has the same name:
- No. Mi. American - At Mosquito Ridge Rd
Also, the following gauge, previously discontinued, is now reporting actual river flow again:
- Rubicon - Below Hell Hole Dam
- Feb 25, 2022:
- Stopped reporting flow information for the following California site:
- San Joaquin - At Squaw Leap Falls
This was at the urging of Paul Martzen, who reported that the power plant that provided flows there in the past has been decommissioned. At this point, the power at Patterson bend is all that's needed.
- Oct 20, 2021:
- Started reporting flow information for the following California sites:
- No. Cottonwood Creek - At Sunny Hill Mine
- Kern - At First Point
- Feb 11, 2021:
- Started reporting flow information for the following California site:
- Eel - At Hearst
- Jun 8, 2020:
- Started reporting flow information for the following Idaho sites:
- Salmon - Near Shoup
- Salmon - Above Corn Creek
Dreamflows started reporting the Salmon - Above Corn Creek estimate at the request of Pete Arpin.
Note: Salmon - Near Shoup is a real gauge.
Salmon - Above Corn Creek is a virtual gauge, computed by summing Salmon - Near Shoup and Mi. Salmon - At Mouth.
- May 23, 2020:
- Started reporting flow information for the following California site:
- Silver Fk American - Above SF American
This virtual gauge is a computation based on three actual/physical EID gauges, all close together.
Previously, Dreamflows reported a similar computation, with the same name and location, performed by EID.
However that computation has recently become unreliable.
Thanks to Jeff Wasielewski for suggesting that Dreamflows perform this computation and publish the results itself.
- May 16, 2020:
- Started reporting flow information for the following California site:
- No. Battle Creek - Above SF Confluence
- May 10, 2020:
- One of the bulletin board database tables on the Dreamflows server was corrupted recently,
and the admins were unable to recover it.
The result was that when paddlers posted a bulletin board message, various undesirable things happened:
* the person posting the message received an error message, so tried again ... and again.
* folks who had asked for bulletin board notifications didn't receive them.
* the message was not correctly marked as 'unread' again.
* bulletin board searches based on keywords failed.
I've since re-created the table, so posts and notifications work again.
Searches should work properly again soon.
- May 3, 2020:
- The physical Idaho Power So. Payette - Below Deer Creek gauge is no longer reporting flow data,
so Dreamflows has started reporting estimated flows at the same location:
- So. Payette - Below Deer Creek
Note: This is an estimated flow site, so expect inaccuracies.
- May 2, 2020:
- Since Borel Powerhouse was decommissioned, Kern - Rel Lake Isabella and Kern - Above Borel Powerhouse have been reporting the same flow.
To match this reality, they have been merged on the flow reports into one site:
- Kern - Below Lake Isabella
This is still the same physical gauge, maintained and operated by the Army Corps of Engineers.
- Apr 27, 2020:
- Added the following California scheduled-release site to the Fantasy Flows page:
- Klamath - J.C. Boyle Schedule
Dreamflows is also publishing this data in calendar form,
and as a graph.
These predictions are for the flows below J.C. Boyle Dam, i.e. for the Bypass run.
Also, for scheduled-releases below J.C. Boyle Powerhouse, i.e. for the Hell's Corner run, Dreamflows used to send you to the relevant
Pacific Power page.
Instead, Dreamflows is now publishing this data itself in calendar form,
and as a graph.
- Apr 13, 2020:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California sites:
- Trinity - Above North Fork
- No. Trinity - At Helena (est)
Dreamflows started reporting the Helena estimate at the request of Joseph Hatcher.
This replaces the old physical gauge at the same location, which stopped reporting last year due to lack of funding.
Note: Flows reported by this new Helena site are only estimates, and could therefore be inaccurate.
On the other hand the Above North Fork site is a real gauge, so (most of the time) is accurate.
- Jan 20, 2020:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Idaho site:
- Moose Creek - Above Selway River

Thanks to Joseph Hatcher, Jacob Cruser and Darin McQuoid for researching and developing an estimating model for this site,
and for suggesting that Dreamflows report it..
- Aug 19, 2019:
- Added the following California scheduled-release sites to the Fantasy Flows page:
- Pit - Above Pit 1 Powerhouse
- May 27, 2019:
- Changed the way that Dreamflows displays gauge location when you click on the
symbol on a Cross-Listing page.
Previously, the gauge location (without any other context) was displayed using Acme Mapper.
Now, the gauge location (with some context) is displayed on a Dreamflows map (called a Gauge Map for now).
Mechanism is similar to the existing Reach Map system, though tailored to display only gauge location.
This is an ongoing project: at this time only gauge location is displayed on the map, but in future more context will be added.
In addition, the 'From' Location field content, on both Reach Map and Gauge Map pages, is now remembered from visit to visit.
- May 23, 2019:
- Changed the way the Dreamflows Bulletin Board keeps track of which posts you've read.
Previously, it used a simple Last Visit mechanism, where the bulletin board assumed that any post created or
edited since your "Last Visit" was unread, while all older posts were assumed to be read.
The Dreamflows Bulletin Board now keeps track of which posts you've actually read (or more accurately which topics
you've opened; it's assumed that you've read all the posts in a topic once you've opened it).
You can now mark individual topics as read or unread, or mark all topics as read as before.
The changes are remembered after you log off and then in again.
If you have exclusive access to your computer, the changes are even remembered when you're not logged in.
See the profile help page for details.
The memory of which topics you've read will be kept on the system for quite some time (for at least a year; if you
visit the bulletin board regularly they should be kept "forever").
- Apr 29, 2019:
- Improved the estimating model for the
- Merced - At Red Bud
virtual gage.
The old model was based on only the Pohono Bridge gauge, and was valid only from Apr though Oct each year.
The new model includes Briceburg and Wawona gauges, and is valid all year.
Feedback on the accuracy (or otherwise) of the new estimating model welcome.
- Apr 23, 2019:
- Added a help page for Dreamflows Reach Maps.
Access it by clicking on the icon near the top of a reach map page.

(Note: which may still be out of date - sometimes way out of date, especially if the gauge is no longer operational).
- Mar 6, 2019:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- No. American - Above Pump Station
This is a real (physical) gauge, data courtesy of Placer County Water Agency.
At the same time, stopped reporting flows for the No. American - At Highway 49 Bridge virtual gauge (since it was only an estimate).

- Started reporting flow information for the following new Idaho site:
- Bear - Below Grace Dam
- Nov 30, 2018:
- Previously, Dreamflows used the Google Maps API for displaying flow or run information in map form.
However, a few months ago, Google decided to started charging for the use of their API - more than Dreamflows was willing to pay, so access to their maps was progressively reduced until at this point their maps are no longer usable.
Dreamflow is busy switching to Leaflet, and reach/run maps (for example Chili Bar) are now working again.
- Nov 1, 2018:
- Added 'Fantasy' graphs to the graph panel, e.g.

Folsom reservoir elevation drives decisions like when sail/power boats have to be removed from the marina (412'),
when the lake goes to 5mph speed limit, etc.
- Sep 14, 2018:
- Dreamflows reports paddle-out information for several sites.
Previously, the corresponding graphs displayed reservoir levels (in feet), but the graphs now report paddle-out distances (in miles) instead:

- Kern - Rel Lake Isabella
- Truckee - Below Lake Tahoe
- Calaveras - Below New Hogan Dam
Also added corresponding scheduled-release entries to the Scheduled Release page.
Note that these are all short-term (five day or less) good-faith predictions from the controlling agency.
They are not commitments and flows can (and sometimes do) change in either direction at a moment's notice based on changing needs.
So, please use these predictions as just another tool for guessing the most likely short-term flow pattern.

Access it by clicking on the icon near the top of the flow report page.
- Mar 1, 2018:
- Made two significant changes to the Dreamflows flow reporting system:
- Added color-coded 'tracks' to the maps page so that you can now visually see which runs are at good flow (and which not), see the
Realtime Page for a sample.
As a byproduct, you can select runs by difficulty (Class III, etc).
- Added the ability to display all flow information for all states reported by Dreamflows on the same page, see the
All States standard flow report.
- Feb 7, 2018:
- Finished adding flow color-coding for reaches reported on the Alphabetical Listing flows page for all states reported by Dreamflows.
Also have updated the Trigger Levels page to show both site-specific and reach-specific flow ranges.
Have reconciled all site-specific flow ranges with reach-specific ones best I can.
If you have values for missing entries or better values for existing entries, please let me know.
- Jan 25, 2018:
- Finished adding flow color-coding for reaches reported on the Idaho Alphabetical Listing flows page.

Have reconciled Washington site-specific flow ranges with reach-specific ones best I can.
- Jan 18, 2018:
- Stopped reporting flows for the following Washington site (since it's unlikely this gauge will be re-activated anytime soon):
- Elwha - Above Lake Mills
Note that the Elwha - At McDonald Bridge gauge is still reported.
- Jan 16, 2018:
- Stopped reporting flows for the following California site (since other gauges give better information):
- Tuolumne - Outflow New Don Pedro Res
- Dec 26, 2017:
- Updated River Permit Index entries to match new rules and dates for 2018.
- Dec 3, 2017:
- Merged the Release Calendar page referred to on Nov 9 into the Scheduled Release page.
The default page gives a synopsis of all scheduled release information (that Dreamflows reports itself) on one page.
The new page has three tabs with may be individually accessed via specific URLs as follows:
- Nov 14, 2017:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California sites:
- Eel - Inflow Lake Pillsbury
- Bull Creek - Near Weott
- Nov 9, 2017:
- Added a Release Calendar page.
This gives a synopsis of all scheduled release information (that Dreamflows reports itself) on one page.

- Started reporting flow information for the following new California sites:
- E. Fk Russian - Below Coyote Dam
- Mi. Feather - Near Portola
- Merced - At Happy Isles Bridge
- Sep 13, 2017:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Kings - Below North Fork
Dreamflows started reporting this site at the prodding of many different paddlers over the years.
Note, though, that this gauge is between the North Fork Kings and Kings River Powerhouse, so a different gauge is usually the better option.
For the Banzai run Kings - At Rodgers Crossing is the better bet,
and use Kings - Inflow Pine Flat Res for the Hidden Kings run.
- Aug 25, 2017:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- No. American - At Highway 49 Bridge
Dreamflows started reporting this site at the request of many different paddlers.
- Aug 8, 2017:
- Added new icons to the cross-listing pages.
Clicking on the icon takes you to the corresponding river/stream entry on the
appropriate flow report page.
For example, clicking on the icon for 'So. American - At Chili Bar' takes you to the Chili Bar
entry on the realtime page.
- Aug 7, 2017:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Little Truckee - Below Boca Reservoir
Dreamflows started reporting this site at the request of Erik Anderson of I.R.I.E. Rafting Company Inc..
- Jul 26, 2017:
- Renamed the pre-existing California site from:
- Tuolumne - New Don Pedro Elevation
to
- Tuolumne - New Don Pedro Paddle Out
since the main purpose is to estimate the current Lower Tuolumne paddle out across New Don Pedro reservoir.
Started reporting paddle out information for the Lower Tuolumne run (Meral’s Pool to Ward’s Ferry).
Special thanks to David Jigour (Recreation Division Manager at Don Pedro) for providing a great deal of information;
without his help this project would have been much harder (and taken much, much longer).
- Jul 13, 2017:
- Stopped reporting flows for the old California site:
- Big Sur - Andrew Molera State Park
since it looks like it's permanently discontinued.
Note the Big Sur - Near Big Sur gauge is still active.
- Jun 21, 2017:
- Finished adding flow color-coding for reaches reported on the Oregon Alphabetical Listing flows page.
Also have updated the Trigger Levels page to show both site-specific and reach-specific flow ranges.
Have reconciled Oregon site-specific flow ranges with reach-specific ones best I can.
- Jun 10, 2017:
- Added new icons to the cross-listing pages, e.g. for California.
Clicking on an icon takes you to the corresponding river/stream entry on the
Alphabetical Listing page.
For example, clicking on the icon for 'North Fork Smith River - Low Divide Rd to Gasquet' takes you to the
Smith River entry.
- May 22, 2017:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Oregon site:
- No. Umpqua - At Toketee Falls
- May 20, 2017:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Oregon sites:
- Lostine - Near Lostine
- Succor Creek - Near Homedale
- May 12, 2017:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- No. Stanislaus - Below NF Diversion
- Apr 20, 2017:
- Finished a first pass of adding flow color-coding for reaches reported on the Alphabetical Listing flows pages.
California and Nevada are complete; other states will follow.
Also have updated the Trigger Levels page to show both site-specific and reach-specific flow ranges.
Have reconciled site-specific flow ranges with reach-specific ones best I can.
However, this mini-project has been a real eye-opener.
There appears to be no consensus amongst guidebook authors or paddlers in general as to what "good flow" means.
Some think it's "perfect flow , others "fun flow", others "possible to survive flow",
and within those groups each author/paddler has a different paddling style.
Evidently there's no pleasing everyone, and probably no hope of pleasing even a majority.
So, please treat the flow ranges (both site-specific and reach-specific) as just someone's opinion, and use them as filters to select possible runs of interest.
Don't, whatever you do, select runs to paddle based solely on these flow ranges and color codings.
- Apr 14, 2017:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Washington site:
- Wenatchee - At Plain
- Apr 10, 2017:
- Started adding flow color-coding for reaches reported on the Alphabetical Listing flows pages.
Note that flow color-coding on the Realtime page and others
like it isn't reach-specific (since in general each flow site serves multiple reaches).
Color coding on the Alphabetical Listing pages, on the other hand, is reach-specific.
Few reaches on the Alphabetical Listing pages are color-coded now, but the number will increase over time;
this is a work in progress.
- Apr 6, 2017:
- Added the following Oregon flow sites to the Fantasy Flows page:
- Mi. Applegate - Above Applegate Lake
- Carberry Creek - Above Applegate Lake

- Started reporting flow information for the following new Colorado site:
- Dolores - At Bedrock
- Feb 27, 2017:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Colorado site:
- Dolores - Below McPhee Reservoir
Dreamflows started reporting this site at the request of Bill Koons.
- Feb 18, 2017:
- Until now, Dreamflows reported two flow sites for Cache Creek at Rumsey.
The first was a physical gauge called Cache Creek - At Rumsey Bridge (Gage), but it was reliable only at higher flows (e.g. during winter).
The second flow site was a computed virtual gauge called Cache Creek - At Rumsey Bridge (Calc), which was reliable only when not raining (e.g. during summer).
USGS took over operation of the physical gauge in 2015, and appears to have done a good job of keeping it calibrated since then.
Consequently, the Cache Creek - At Rumsey Bridge (Calc) computed virtual gauge is no longer needed, so has been taken off the Dreamflows reports.
To match, Cache Creek - At Rumsey Bridge (Gage) has been renamed to just Cache Creek - At Rumsey Bridge.
Bottom line: Dreamflows now reports only one flow site at Rumsey, and it's a physical gauge named
- Cache Creek - At Rumsey Bridge
- Feb 17, 2017:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- No. Cache Creek - Near Chalk Mountain
Dreamflows started reporting this site at the request of Tony DeRiggi.

- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Pit - At Canby
- Jan 20, 2017:
- Decided maintaining separate "Easywater Paddling" flow and cross-listing pages was too much work.
Besides, having to look for gauge and run information on separate pages is probably confusing for visitors.
So, copied gauge and associated run information from the "Easywater Paddling" pages to their
respective primary flow and cross-listing pages.
The "Easywater Paddling" pages will go away soon.
- Jan 19, 2017:

- Oct 9, 2016:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Oregon sites:
- McKenzie - Clear Lake Outlet
- McKenzie - Below Payne Creek
- Oct 6, 2016:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- So. Battle Creek - Below Coleman Div Dam
This site replaces So. Battle Creek - Above NF Confluence, which is no longer operational.
A side-effect of this is that the computed site:
- Battle Creek - Above Baldwin Creek
is once again reporting data.
- Oct 4, 2016:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Utah site:
- Weber - At Gateway
- Oct 3, 2016:

- Rio Brazos - At Fishtail Road
- Oct 1, 2016:
- Updated all the rating tables currently reported by Dreamflows
with the latest-available values
(which may still be out of date - sometimes way out of date, especially if the gauge is no longer operational).
Also added a bunch more rating tables to the list.
- Jul 2, 2016:
- Added the following California flow sites to the Fantasy Flows page:
- Eel - At Scotia
- Napa - Near Napa
- Guadalupe - At San Jose
- Truckee - Near Truckee
- Jul 2, 2016:
- On the Fantasy Flows page, added an
icon to those flow sites which get their data from the National Weather Service River Forecast Center.
Clicking on the icon takes you to the detailed RFC page for that site.
This feature was added at the request of Pete Arpin.
- Jun 25, 2016:
- Added , and
icons to the Comments section of the flow reports.
Clicking on a given icon takes you to the same flow site on the corresponding Realtime, Daily or Fantasy Flows report.
Icons that stand out were selected to get everyone's attention, but after a while the presentation will probably be toned down.
- May 25, 2016:
- Added a Dreamflows calendar-style page showing release schedules for:
- Mokelumne - Below Electra Powerhouse
- May 18, 2016:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- South Silver - Above Ice House Reservoir
Note: this is a new gauge, and (until they can fully calibrate the gauge) the data may not be accurate at higher flows.
- Apr 20, 2016:
- Stopped reporting the estimated flow site Cherry Creek - Above Cherry Lake Calc.
Since there's now just the one site, renamed the physical gauge site from
- Cherry Creek - Above Cherry Lake Gage
to just
- Cherry Creek - Above Cherry Lake
- Apr 14, 2016:
- Added Dreamflows calendar-style pages showing release schedules for:
- North Fork Mokelumne - Devil's Nose Run
- North Fork Mokelumne - Tiger Creek Run
- Mar 22, 2016:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Colorado site:
- San Miguel - Near Placerville
- Mar 21, 2016:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new New Mexico site:
- Embudo Creek - Near Dixon
- Mar 20, 2016:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Oregon site:
- Fall Creek - Above North Fork
- Stopped reporting estimated river flow for the existing Oregon site:
- Mi. Santiam - Above Green Peter Lake
and started reporting the following site (which reports actual gauge height) in its place:
- Mi. Santiam - Near Cascadia
- Mar 14, 2016:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Washington site:
- Kettle - Near Laurier
- Mar 5, 2016:
- Added Dreamflows calendar-style pages showing release schedules for:
- South Fork Silver Creek - Below Ice House Dam
- South Fork American - Slab Creek
- Mar 1, 2016:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Montana site:
- West Rosebud Cr - At Emerald Lake CG
This flow site replaces the old West Rosebud Cr - Near Roscoe site.
- Feb 3, 2016:
- Created a new California site:
- Trinity - Inflow Trinity Lake
to replace the old California site
- Trinity - Inflow Clair Engle Lake
Firstly, somewhere along the line, the name of the lake changed from 'Clair Engle Lake' back to 'Trinity Lake', so the change brings the site name up to date.
Secondly, Dreamflows was previously reporting incorrect inflow information, but has now corrected that error.
By switching to a new flow site, all the old/bad flow information has effectively been discarded, so the new graphs and historical information will be correct and up-to-date.
- Jan 31, 2016:
- Started reporting paddle-out information for the following new California site:
- Eel - Below Van Arsdale Dam
- Jan 21, 2016:
- Started reporting paddle-out information for the following new California site:
- American - Folsom Elev NF Paddle Out
- Jan 20, 2016:
- Renamed the pre-existing California site from:
- American - Folsom Lake Elevation
to
- American - Folsom Elev SF Paddle Out
since the main purpose is to estimate the current South Fork (Gorge run) paddle out.
This is also in anticipation of providing a North Fork (Confluence run) paddle out soon.
- Jan 10, 2016:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Wyoming site:
- Snake - Near Alpine
- Jan 9, 2016:

- Oct 29, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Idaho site:
- E. Fk So. Salmon - Above Sugar Creek
- Oct 28, 2015:
- Renamed the pre-existing California site So. Silver Cr - Below Ice House Res to
- So. Silver Creek - Below Ice House Reservoir
and started reporting realtime flow for it. The flow data is courtesy of SMUD, provided as part of the UARP relicensing effort.
- Oct 24, 2015:
- Stopped reporting flows for the old Washington site:
- Big Quilcene - Near Mouth
and started reporting the following new Washington site instead:
- Big Quilcene - Below Big Quilcene Dam
It's all very confusing, but the short version seems to be that the Big Quilcene - Near Mouth gauge, which was reported by NOAA, might have been inaccurate either in flow value, or reported gauge location, or both.
On the other hand, the new Big Quilcene - Below Big Quilcene Dam gauge is a USGS gauge and USGS confirm that its location and flow values are both correct.
- Oct 5, 2015:
- Changed the name of the following existing California site from
- So. Stanislaus - Below Filladelfia Div Dam
to
- So. Stanislaus - Below Philadelphia Div
based on information provided by Tom Stapleton of PG&E. Thank you, Tom, for the correction.
- Sep 22, 2015:
- Started reporting gauge-derived flow information for the following new California sites:
- No. Kern - Above Fairview Dam
- No. Kern - Below Fairview Dam
Flow and gauge location information provided courtesy of Southern California Edison.
- Aug 1, 2015:
- Started reporting gauge-derived flow information for the following pre-existing Oregon site:
- W. Fk Hood - Above East Fork
Previously, this flow site was reported as an estimate, but NOAA has installed a real gauge, so actual flows are now being reported.
- Jul 31, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Oregon site:
- Mi. Santiam - Below Green Peter Dam
- Jul 26, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Washington site:
- Duckabush - Near Brinnon
- Jul 25, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Utah site:
- Green - At Mineral Bottom
- Jul 23, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California sites:
- Los Angeles - Below Sepulveda Dam
- Los Angeles - Above Rio Hondo
Dreamflows started reporting these two sites at the request of Anthea Raymond.
- Jul 20, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Utah site:
- San Rafael - Near Green River
- Jul 18, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Washington site:
- Klickitat - Below Summit Creek
This site is a physical USGS gauge, and replaces the old Klickitat - Near Glenwood estimated flow site.
Note that the locations of the two sites differ - the new Klickitat - Below Summit Creek physical gauge is 16 miles downstream of the old Klickitat - Near Glenwood virtual gauge.
- Jul 14, 2015:
- Switched the source of the data for the following pre-existing California site:
- So. American - Below Slab Creek Dam
As part of relicensing, SMUD has made realtime flow available to us via CDEC (thank you both SMUD and CDEC).
This is a physical gauge, measuring actual flow. As a result, Dreamflows is now reporting accurate flow below Slab Creek dam.
Previously, Dreamflows reported a computation of spill to the river based on Slab Creek reservoir elevation, plus an estimate of fish flow releases.
While helpful, this didn't take actual release to the river via the dam into account (because that information wasn't available to us).
This problem goes away now we have a real gauge below the dam.
- Jun 30, 2015:
- Switched the source of the data for the following pre-existing Oregon site:
- No. Rogue - Above North Fork Res
Previously, Dreamflows got the data from a NOAA gauge, however that station claimed to be located above North Fork Res when it's in fact below North Fork Res.
This means that Above North Fork Res data has been incorrect for the last couple years.
Dreamflows historical data for this gauge has been deleted accordingly.
Dreamflows has switched to reporting a USGS gauge instead (USGS kindly double-checked that the location and data for their gauge are both correct).
On the plus side - Above North Fork Res data is now being reported correctly.
- Jun 29, 2015:
- Started reporting gauge-derived flow information for the following pre-existing Washington site:
- Icicle Creek - Above Snow Creek
Previously, Icicle Creek was reported as an estimate, but USGS has installed a real gauge, so actual flows are now being reported.
- Jun 25, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following pre-existing Washington site:
- Big Quilcene - Near Mouth
since NOAA has started reporting flow for it (previously the Washington Dept. of Ecology operated this site, but then discontinued it).
- Jun 24, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following pre-existing Washington site:
- Chelan - Below Lake Chelan
since USGS is once again reporting flow for it.
- May 17, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Kern - Below Kern Canyon PH Dam
Dreamflows started reporting this site at the request of Brett Duxbury.
- May 16, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Grindstone Creek - Near Grindstone Rancheria
- May 15, 2015:
- Stopped reporting flows for the following California site (since a better flow site - Cherry Creek - Above Cherry Lake Gage - is now available):
- Cherry Creek - Above Cherry Lake Calc
- May 12, 2015:
- On the reach cross-listing pages, for example for the No. American - Inflow Lake Clementine, changed the flow link so you're taken to the
'panel' graph page instead of to the
'realtime' graph.
The rationale is that folks visiting the xlist page will likely be doing some kind of research, and having all the available graphs display together is more convenient. However, the flow pages still link to the 'realtime' graph as they used to; the rationale is that folks visiting the flows pages most likely just want the current flow.
- May 9, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- So. Kings - Above Boyden Cave
This is a realtime (physical) gauge, which replaces the old Dreamflows estimated/virtual 'So. Kings - Below Cedar Grove' flow site.
- May 3, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Piru Creek - Above Frenchmans Flat
- May 2, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information (not just gauge height) for the following California site:
- Cherry Creek - Above Cherry Lake Gage
The rating table (used to compute flow from gauge height) was supplied by Hetch Hetchy Water and Power.
- Apr 28, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Cherry Creek - Above Cherry Lake Gage
This is an actual gauge, however at this time it measures only gauge height.
On the other hand, the Cherry Creek - Above Cherry Lake Calc gauge reports flow instead of gauge height, but that's the computed noon-to-noon daily average, something quite different. Bottom line: thought required when comparing the two.
- Feb 16, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Utah site:
- Colorado - At Potash
- Feb 9, 2015:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California sites:
- Stony Creek - Above Stony Creek Res
- Stony Creek - Above Black Butte Lake
Stopped reporting 'Stony Creek - Inflow Black Butte Res' since the above two gauges make it obsolete.
- Nov 25, 2014:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- So. Kings - Above Roaring River
- Nov 4, 2014:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Colorado site:
- Animas - At Silverton
- Aug 4, 2014:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Utah site:
- Green - Near Greendale
- Jul 31, 2014:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Oregon sites:
- Beaver Creek - At Troutdale
- Oak Grove Clackamas - At Ripplebrook Campground
- Jul 28, 2014:
- Started reporting flow information once more for the following Washington site:
- Squire Creek - At Squire Creek Park
- Jul 7, 2014:
- Switched from reporting realtime flow to reporting daily average flow for the following California site:
- Kaweah - Inflow Terminus Res
The reason for the switch is that the realtime plot jumps around so much that it has dubious value.
Even the daily plot isn't that great, however - when compared to the Three Rivers gauge -
it should help to show when the South Fork Kaweah is in.
- Jun 22, 2014:
- Started reporting realtime reservoir elevation for the following California site:
- Tuolumne - New Don Pedro Elevation
Started reporting elevation as the result of a bulletin-board posting by 'valentinescott'.
- May 29, 2014:
- Added the ability to view all four available graphs (day, month, year and average) for a given Dreamflows gauge site simultaneously on a composite 'panel'.
An example graph panel page is:
- Smith - At Jedediah Smith
Note the '?' help link on the panel page.
For a full list of available graph panel pages, click the 'Graphs' link at the bottom of just about any Dreamflows page.
Dreamflows started reporting this new feature at the suggestion of Misty Newell.
- May 24, 2014:
- Stopped reporting flows for the following California site (since data is no longer available):
- Big Sur - Andrew Molera State Park
- Apr 29, 2014:
- Started reporting flow information for the following California site:
- Tuolumne - At Wards Ferry
- Apr 28, 2014:
- Started creating "Average" graphs for gauges on select free-flowing rivers in California, for example:
- Smith - At Jedediah Smith
- No. American - Inflow Lake Clementine
- No. Kern - At Kernville
These new graphs show weighted average flows based on the available data in the Dreamflows database.
They show what kinds of flow to expect at varying times of the year.
The intended purpose is to help with planning trips.
Click on the "Graphs" link at the bottom of a Dreamflows page
to identify the sites which currently support "Average" graphs.
Will add other "Average" graphs as time and opportunity permits.
Dreamflows started reporting this new feature as a result of requests and suggestions from Darin McQuoid and Daniel Brasuell.
- Mar 20, 2014:
- Started reporting flow information for the following California site:
- Marble Fk Kaweah - Near Lodgepole
- Feb 25, 2014:
- Started reporting flow information for the following Nevada site:
- Bruneau - At Rowland
- Feb 21, 2014:
- Started reporting flow information for the following Idaho site:

- Started reporting reliable hourly flow information, courtesy of PG&E, for the following California sites:
- Pit - Above Pit 1 Powerhouse
- Stanislaus - At Camp Nine
- Mokelumne - Below Electra Powerhouse (computed estimated flow)
Previously, data for these sites was available spottily, or not at all.
Thank you, PG&E, for making this data available.
- Jan 6, 2014:
- Started reporting flow information for the following New Mexico sites:
- Rio Chama - Above Abiquiu Reservoir
- Rio Chama - Near La Puente
- Jan 4, 2014:
- Stopped reporting flows for the following Washington site (since data is no longer available):
- Chelan - Below Lake Chelan
- Jan 2, 2014:
- Added a "Forgotten Your Username?" option to the Dreamflows login page.
- Jan 1, 2014:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new estimated California site:
- No. Tuolumne - At Riverside Campground
Happy New Year!
- Dec 29, 2013:
- On the flow reports, the old region
- Oregon Rivers
was getting unwieldy, so split it into three new ones:
- Oregon Coastal Rivers
- Oregon Central Rivers
- Oregon Eastern Rivers
Also re-ordered sites in the Eastern Rivers section to follow a consistent clockwise-rotation-around-the-state convention.
- Dec 26, 2013:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Washington site:
- No. Stillaguamish - Near Arlington
- Oct 8, 2013:
- Stopped reporting flows for the following Washington sites (they have been discontinued due to budget cuts):
- Squire Creek - At Squire Creek Park
- Jim Creek - At Whites Road
- Rock Creek - At Stevenson
- Oct 7, 2013:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Washington site:
- Chelan - Below Lake Chelan
- Oct 6, 2013:
- Added a 'Favorites' zone to the flow report pages, for example on the Realtime report.
This option displays the flow sites that you've selected using the Favorites page.
This allows you to create your own, personal, list of 'favorite' flow sites.
You need a Dreamflows account and be logged in to set up your favorites list (so that Dreamflows can associate the list with you).
Similarly, you'll be prompted to login if you visit using a new browser (so that Dreamflows can associate your list with the browser).
However, that's for setup - normally, you don't need to be logged in to access the personal flow report and check your favorite flows.
- Sep 22, 2013:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Oregon site:
- Molalla - Near Canby
Dreamflows started reporting this site at the request of Jeremy Lynn.
- Sep 18, 2013:
- Added a 'Map' format to the flow report pages (previously, only 'Standard' and 'Compact' formats were available).
Sorry, but only conventional desktops are supported at this time; operation with touch-screen devices is still problematic.
Try out the Map version of the Realtime report here.
Detailed help is available by clicking on the symbol to the right of the main "Go" button,
or clicking here.
The 'Map' feature gives you the ability to:
-
- Visualize where gauges are on the map.
- Display basic flow information, and get access to common auxilliary information.
- Locate a specific flow site, or group of sites, by name.
- Specify a city (or other location) and locate flow sites within X miles of that location.
- Select only those sites that are at good/optimum flow.
- Select only those sites that are within a specific region.
- Select sites by a combination of criteria to narrow the search even further.
- Aug 23, 2013:
- Stopped reporting flows for the California site Tule - Inflow Lake Success since the flows reported by
- Tule - Near Springville
(a gauge already reported by Dreamflows) are more relevant.
- Aug 13, 2013:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Mi. Stanislaus - Near Kennedy Meadow
- Aug 8, 2013:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Colorado site:
- No. Saint Vrain Cr - Above Buttonrock Res
- Aug 1, 2013:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Washington sites:
- Elwha - At McDonald Bridge
- Suiattle - Near Darrington
- In addition, Dreamflows is no longer reporting the Elwha - Above Lake Mills gauge;
it's been superceded by the Elwha - At McDonald Bridge gauge mentioned above.
- Jul 29, 2013:
- Started reporting gauge information for the following pre-existing Oregon site:
- No. Rogue - Above North Fork Res
Previously, Dreamflows estimated river flow for this site.
Now, it's an actual NOAA/NWS gauge.
- Jul 28, 2013:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Oregon site:
- Rogue - Near McLeod
- Jul 24, 2013:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Idaho site:
- Boundary Creek - Near Porthill
- Jul 22, 2013:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Nevada site:
- Jarbidge - Below Jarbidge
- Jul 20, 2013:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Oregon sites:
- Imnaha - At Imnaha
- Sandy - Near Marmot
- Jul 17, 2013:
- Stopped reporting flows for the following Washington sites (since data is no longer available):
- Joseph Creek - Near Mouth
- Panther Creek - Near Carson
- Jul 15, 2013:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Silver Creek - Below Camino Dam
- Jun 16, 2013:
- Added a List of Composite Maps section to the Cross-Listing page of each state that features them (currently CA, ID and NM).
For example, this is the current list of composite maps for California.
- Jun 6, 2013:
- Added a Flow Monitoring zone to the realtime flow reports.
The initial implementation supports automated flow compliance monitoring for SYRCL (the South Yuba River Citizens League) as part of the Yuba-Bear relicensing effort.
Flow compliance monitoring will hopefully be extended in the future to support other relicensing efforts.
The flow monitoring page is bare-bones right now, but will be extended later as other drainages and gauges become available:
- FERC Flow Compliance Monitoring
- Feb 25, 2013:
- Started reporting water temperature information for the following new California site:
- So. American - Below Weber Creek
Note: This gauge doesn't report river flow (only water temperature).
Dreamflows started reporting this data based on information provided by Pete Arpin, and at the suggestion of both Pete Arpin and Bob Center.
- Feb 20, 2013:
- Update: I previously stated that users may keep their existing BBS Website entries.
I'm generally okay with leaving entries that are commercial in nature, if they are somehow related to
recreational river use.
However, I've started removing existing entries that seem unrelated, e.g. selling vitamins, furniture
or real estate (even if it is on a river or lake).
- Feb 19, 2013:
- In the Bulletin Board profile, the optional Website field was supported at one time, and users may keep their existing entries (if they have one set).
However, entries can no longer be changed.
This is to reduce abuse from those who want to use Dreamflows as a marketing tool.
If you have a legitimate river-related website that would provide value to visitors, and which you'd like set in your profile, contact chris@dreamflows.com.
- Jan 13, 2013:
- Added rating tables for the following flow sites reported by Dreamflows:
- Trinity - Below Lewiston Dam
- Trinity - At Douglas City
- McCloud - At Shasta Lake
- Santa Ynez - Below Los Laureles Canyon
- Jan 9, 2013:
- Added rating tables for the following flow sites reported by Dreamflows:
- Redwood Creek - At Hwy 299

- Started reporting flow information for the following new California Easywater sites:
- San Joaquin - At Highway 41
- San Joaquin - Below Skaggs Bridge
- Aug 6, 2012:
- Started reporting realtime reservoir elevation for the following new California site:
- So. American - Slab Creek Dam Elevation
Previously, reservoir elevation was reported along with the estimated flow for So. American - Below Slab Creek Dam,
however because of this a graph of reservoir elevation wasn't available.
Now it is.
Dreamflows started reporting this information at the request of Paul Redd.
He will use reservoir elevation to help determine when Slab Creek Res is good for flat-water paddling.
- Jun 24, 2012:
- Added a Dreamflows calendar-style page showing the flow schedule for Clear Creek - Below Whiskeytown Lake.
- Jun 19, 2012:
- Started reporting scheduled flow information on the Fantasy Flows page for
Clear Creek - Below Whiskeytown Lake.
Inspiration for reporting this information came from a bulletin board post by Ron Rogers.

- Apr 24, 2012:
- Started reporting realtime flow information for the following new California site:
- San Joaquin - Below Stevenson Creek
Dreamflows started reporting this gauge as a result of information provided by Paul Martzen.
- Mar 7, 2012:
- Several folks reported that they were getting '910' error messages when they clicked on a section link
(under the Section Index header) on the new flows report page.
Thanks to all of you - amongst other things, reports from several different visitors makes it clear there's a pervasive problem,
not some kind of local fluke or environment issue.
Anyway, Tracy Soule provided enough information that I was able to reproduce, and create a workaround.
Both Firefox and IE manifested the problem, whereas Chrome, Safari and Opera did not.
Go Chrome, Safari and Opera.
The problem should be fixed now.
- Mar 2, 2012:
- Dreamflows is now providing unrestricted access to Fantasy Flows from the Flows Page.
Previously, before granting access, I wanted email from you saying you understood just how fantastical and unreliable those
Fantasy Flows could be (and very often are), but I got tired of that.
So have at it and enjoy, but please, please, please take those disclaimers seriously.
- Mar 1, 2012:
- Merged the Realtime, Daily and Fantasy Flows reports into a single Flows Page.
Select the flow report and format of your choice by means of the drop-down menus near the top of the page, then click Go.
The old pages (14 of them) are now defunct; visitors are redirected from each of the old pages to the single new one.
- Jan 9, 2012:
- Added select 'Composite' maps to the Cross-Listing Pages.
Each 'Composite' map shows the relationship between gauges and runs for that drainage,
or in some cases logical sub-section of that drainage.
Each composite map appears under the most upstream gauge/run in the drainage.
So, for instance, for the North Yuba, the Composite entry appears under the Sierra City gauge,
since that is the most upstream gauge in the North Yuba drainage.
The following Composite maps are currently available:
- South Fork American River - Lower - Composite
- North Fork Kern River - Lower - Composite
- North Yuba River - Composite
- South Fork Payette River - Composite
[For folks who are wondering why the SF Payette is included at this time, the answer is that the primary Dreamflows beta tester,
Tracy from Boise, is from ... well ... Boise, so of course I'm going to include the SF Payette
].
On the 'Composite' map, colored 'tracks' show the approximate path of each run.
A by-product of this is that, where available, tracks information is supplied even on non-composite maps.
For instance, tracks are now drawn by default for the Chili Bar run:
- So. American - At Chili Bar
Note that for Chili Bar, take-out locations downstream of the nominal take-out for the run are shown.
Admitedly it's a little funky to show take-outs (or in other situations put-ins) beyond the bounds of the recognized run,
however I think that's just life; not everything fits neatly into a pre-conceived box, and
folks put in/take out wherever's convenient.
Note also, that if a given function on the map is disabled (e.g Show Rapids is greyed out)
it just means that information isn't available (yet).
- Dec 17, 2011:
- Added a 'landmark' marker type to reach maps, displayed as .
This type of marker is for locating lunch spots, parking areas when put-in/take-out requires hiking, etc.
A sample (but real) map with all the currently supported marker types appears here.
- Dec 8, 2011:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- San Francisquito Cr - At Stanford University
- Nov 26, 2011:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- San Antonio - Near Lockwood
- Nov 23, 2011:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- So. Gualala - Near Sea Ranch
- Oct 30, 2011:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Rubicon - At Ellicott Bridge
This data is being provided direct to Dreamflows by Placer County Water Agency as part of the relicensing process.
Huge thanks to Hilde Schweitzer for her work in encouraging Placer County Water Agency to make this data available.
- Oct 13, 2011:
- The following Washingston State Department of Ecology flow sites are now being reported with 15-minute data:
- Dosewallips - At Brinnon
- Nason Creek - Near Mouth
- Pilchuck Creek - At I-5 Bridge
- Squire Creek - At Squire Creek Park
- Deer Creek - Near Oso
- Jim Creek - At Whites Road
- Canyon Creek - Near Masonic Park
- Big Quilcene - Near Mouth
- Grays - Below Hwy-4 Bridge
- Germany Creek - At Mouth
- Little Klickitat - Near Wahkiacus
- Peshastin Creek - Near Wenatchee Confluence
- Little Wenatchee - Below Rainy Creek
- Soleduck - Near Quillayute
- Mad - Above Camp Nine
- Rock Creek - At Stevenson
- Wind River - At Stabler
They were previously reported as daily average flow.
- Sep 28, 2011:
- Changed the way put-in/take-out locations are reporting on the cross-listing pages.
Previously, locations were displayed individually (each on its own map).
Now, a single map displays all published put-in and take-out locations, as well as the gauge location.
This should help make it much clearer what the relationships are, particularly between the run and its associated gauge.
Rapid locations are also displayed where available (very few at this point in time).
In addition, clicking on a given marker shows its lat/long co-ordinates, and also offers driving directions.
To see how the new system works, try Chili Bar.
On the cross-listing page, click on the 'MAP' icon for the Chili Bar entry;
this will take you here.
- Sep 6, 2011:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Coyote Creek - Above Coyote Lake
- Aug 29, 2011:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- No. Cosumnes - At Sand Ridge Rd
- Aug 17, 2011:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Washington site:
- No. Lewis - Above Muddy River
Dreamflows started reporting this flow site at the request of Jeremy Lynn.
- Jul 4, 2011:
- Stopped reporting realtime flow information for Stony Creek - Inflow Black Butte Res, and started reporting daily averages instead.
The reason is that the realtime flow data jumped around so badly, and asymetrically, that it was almost impossible to make out what was going on.
Reporting daily average flow instead solves this problem.
- Jul 1, 2011:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California sites:
- Slate Creek - Below Diversion Dam
- Lost Creek - Below Lost Creek Res
- So. Feather - Below SF Diversion Dam
- Jun 25, 2011:
- Added a 'Topo' display capability to the Using Google Maps option of the
desktop customized flow reports page.
The topos are somewhat limited in zoom range, and at the lowest zoom some of the tiles are missing,
which MyTopo will hopefully fix.
Either way, it's really cool of MyTopo to make these maps available to us.
- Jun 10, 2011:
- Added two search capabilities to the Google Maps option of the
desktop customized flow reports page.
The first searches for a user-supplied address, city or zip code, while the second searches (by name) for one or more Dreamflows flow sites.
- Jun 5, 2011:
- Added a Google Maps option to the desktop customized flow reports page.
See the help page for an example and more information.
Note that by default it displays only your 'favorites' flow sites, however you can ask it to map all flow sites, or just realtime, if you wish.
I have been pondering a maps version of the Dreamflows reports for some time (a couple years in fact),
but could never decide how best to present it.
So when Mike Walkinshaw shared a link to his own mapping system for Dreamflows,
I was fired up and used his system as a model.
Thank you, Mike, for the inspiration, and permission to model my system on yours.
- May 23, 2011:
- Dreamflows started offering customized flow reports for desktop/laptop computers.
Flows are reported in the same format as the existing realtime/daily flow reports, however,
you get to specify which flow sites are reported, and in which order, by means of your favorites list.
This complements the Smart Phone system already in existence.
For more information, visit the relevant Help Page
- May 19, 2011:
- Started reporting realtime flow information for the following (existing) California site:
- No. Yuba - Inflow New Bullards Bar
Previously, this site reported only daily average flow.
- May 17, 2011:
- Dreamflows is once again reporting the California site:
- No. Yuba - Below New Bullards Bar
Yuba County Water Agency shared that CDEC's CPH site is Colgate Powerhouse flow,
i.e. it's the diversion from New Bullards Bar, so subtracting CPH from BUL gives the release to the river.
Thanks to Bob Center for discovering this and passing it on.
- May 11, 2011:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Utah site:
- Escalante - Near Escalante
Dreamflows started reporting this flow site at the request of Rorie Gotham.

Also renamed and re-organized some of the pages.
This is to allow more flexibility for future enhancements.
In particular, the Mobile entry in the blue banner at the top of Dreamflows pages has changed to Custom,
which takes you to the Custom Flows Start page.
- Apr 17, 2011:
- Added the following flow sites to the Fantasy Flows page:

- So. Salmon - At Forks of Salmon
- Salmon - At Somes Bar
- West Walker - At Walker
- Mar 27, 2011:
- Started offering Dreamflows Mobile Services (a free service).
To access, click on the Mobile link in the blue header of any Dreamflow page.
For details on how it works, click on the Mobile-Help link in the gray menubar on that page.
But briefly, this service offers the ability to create your own 'favorites' list of flow sites, effectively creating personalized Dreamflows flow reports.
The flow information is formatted specifically for smart phones.
It's server based, not an 'app', so the same system works for iPhone, Android and others.
However, it also renders fine (though a little differently, and in a large font) on modern browsers like Firefox, Opera, IE, Safari and Chrome.
This means that a smart phone is not required - a PC works too.
- Mar 23, 2011:
- Started reporting realtime flow information on the pages for the following new California site:
- Guadalupe - At San Jose
Dreamflows started reporting this gauge at the request of Brendan Curran.
[Brendan's interest is in playboating, and recommends the section from Children's Discovery Museum to Below 880 (2.6 miles)].
- Mar 6, 2011:
- Started reporting realtime flow information for the following (existing) California sites:
- So. Feather - Below Little Grass Valley
- So. Feather - Below Forbestown Div Dam
Previously, these sites reported only scheduled release information.
This new realtime information is courtesy of the South Feather Water and Power Agency.
- Feb 19, 2011:
- Started publishing the Dreamflows Easywater Flows page.
This page reports gauges that are associated with easy whitewater (Class I and easy Class II).
A Realtime Flows version is also available.
Most of the Easywater flow sites already appear on other reports, since the same gauge serves both easy and hard runs.
However, the following California Easywater flow sites are all new (i.e. they don't appear elsewhere):
- So. Eel - At Miranda
- Sacramento - Below Keswick Dam
- Sacramento - At Vina-Woodson Bridge
- Tuolumne - Below La Grange Dam
- San Joaquin - Below Friant Dam
- San Joaquin - At Donny Bridge

- Apr 11, 2010:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Colorado site:
- Yampa - At Steamboat Springs
- Apr 9, 2010:
- On the flow reports sites that are not reporting, and are known to be "discontinued", are now marked "Site not currently reporting".
Gauges come and go, so a gauge that's discontinued this year could be reporting again next year and vice versa.
As you might expect, it's often just a matter of funding.

- Rogue - At Raygold
- Rogue - Near Agness
- Owyhee - Near Rome
- Mar 9, 2009:
- John Donovan pointed out that the site name Mi. American - Rel Oxbow was misleading, since
the gauge is somewhat downstream (below the NF MF confluence in fact).
As a result, the name has been changed to Mi. American - Above Tunnel Chute.
- Mar 6, 2009:
- Added the following California rating tables:

Nope, not a country flag; the red/green/yellow stripes represent the high/good/low colors used by Dreamflows for river flow levels.
- Mar 3, 2009:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Indian Creek - Near Douglas City
- Mar 2, 2009:

- Feb 11, 2009:
- Started reporting gauge datum (i.e., elevation of the gauge above mean sea level) for most flow sites reported by Dreamflows.
The datum information is taken from a variety of sources, usually the reporting agency (e.g. USGS or CDEC).
The datum (when available) is appended to the gauge location information on the Cross-Listing Page.
For instance, the datum of the Chili Bar gauge is given as 931 feet.
- Jan 26, 2009:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Washington sites:
- Chewuch - At Winthrop
- Icicle Creek - Above Snow Creek
- Palouse - At Hooper
- Dungeness - Near Sequim
- Dec 15, 2008:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Oregon site:
- Elk Creek - Above Rogue River
- Dec 14, 2008:
- Renamed 'Cache Creek - At Rumsey Bridge' to 'Cache Creek - At Rumsey Bridge (Calc)', and
in addition started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- Cache Creek - At Rumsey Bridge (Gage)
Historically, the "Gage" entry on the reports has been accurate only at higher flows, so that the "Calc" entry was the better option at lower flows.
For more detail, read the bulletin board entries for "Calc" and "Gage".
- Dec 8, 2008:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Washington sites:
- Spokane - At Spokane
- American - Near Nile
- Canyon Creek - Near Amboy
- No. Skokomish - Below Staircase
- So. Skokomish - Near Union

- Elwha - Above Lake Mills
Reason: USGS no longer reports flow information for this gauge.
- Nov 15, 2008:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new California site:
- East Walker - Near Bridgeport
Dreamflows started reporting this gauge at the request of Tom Yant.
- Nov 4, 2008:
- Replaced the old alphabetical listing page (ordered by flow site) with a new
- alphabetical listing page
ordered by reach/run.
The new page contains more information, and presents it in a more intuitive and useful way.
- Oct 20, 2008:
- Started reporting flow information for the following new Washington sites:
- Wind River - At Stabler
- Panther Creek - Near Carson
- Rock Creek - At Stevenson
Only gauge heights are available at this time.
- Oct 13, 2008:
- Added a link to Tom Saffell's California River Map in the Index section of the flow report pages.
- Jul 1, 2008:
- Added a guidebook entry for the following Oregon run:
- Applegate - First Bridge to Second Bridge
- Jun 19, 2008:
- Finally bowed to the inevitable: on the Idaho Page,
renamed Payette - Below Deer Creek to So. Payette - Below Deer Creek.
Maps (USGS, DeLorme, Google) all clearly show the section between middle and north forks as being the Main Payette, but local usage insists it's the South Fork.
Who cares, really, as long as we're all talking about the same thing, and since the locals call it the 'South Fork', we'll follow suit.
- Jun 13, 2008:
- Started reporting reservoir elevations for the following new California site:
- American - Folsom Lake Elevation
This information is intended to help determine the expected paddle out at the end of the Gorge run on the South Fork American.
Also paddle out for the Confluence run on the North Fork American (i.e. the run between the NF/MF confluence, and Rattlesnake Bar).
If you have information about which reservoir elevations correspond to what length of paddle out (either in distance or in time, for either of the above two runs), please share.
- May 28, 2008:
- Started reporting flows for the following new California site:
- New River - New River Gorge
This is an obsolete (but real) river gauge whose readings are entered into Dreamflows every now and then by a local volunteer.
This means the most-recent data may be somewhat out-of-date.
If so, you can still compare the readings (which are actual flow) with Dreamflows' Denny estimate (which is estimated flow), and in this way "calibrate" the Denny gauge, i.e. get a feel for whether the Denny estimate is currently high, good or low, and compensate accordingly.
- May 25, 2008:
- Started reporting flows for the following new Oregon site:
- Applegate - Below Applegate Dam
- May 7, 2008:
- Added several other rating tables.
See the complete list of available tables.
- May 6, 2008:
- Added the following rating tables:
- Scott - Near Fort Jones
- West Br Feather - At Whiskey Flat Bridge
- Mi. Cosumnes - At Mt Aukum Rd
- Updated the rating table for:
- So. Merced - At Wawona
- May 1, 2008:
- Started reporting estimated flows for the following new California site:
- Cherry Creek - Above Cherry Lake
This EXPERIMENTAL calculation involves a lot of different gauges in different places, and the timing between them doesn't line up quite right.
So, expect to see glitches in the graph.
But, in general, during snowmelt (like now), expect to see a nice sine wave with the peak in the early hours of the morning,
and the trough late afternoon.
Give feedback when you go up there please - let's learn how reliable the estimate is,
and try to relate reported flows with what's good to go.
- May 1, 2008:
- Started reporting estimated flows for the following pre-existing California site:
- South Silver - At Autobahn
Previously, for South Silver - At Autobahn, Low/Good/High flow levels were entered by hand
when some benign person was up there and remembered to enter them.
Now, they're EXPERIMENTALLY estimated based on Ice House storage changes, and a guess at the Ice House outflow.
The estimate might not always be super accurate, but most of the time it should be reasonable.
At least, that's the theory.
Feedback, please.
- Apr 30, 2008:
- Started reporting flows for the following new Oregon site:
- Applegate - Inflow Applegate Lake
- Added a corresponding guidebook entry:
- Upper Applegate River (Road access to Applegate Lake)
- Apr 29, 2008:
- Switched from using TopoZone to ACME Mapper for gauge, put-in and take-out locations.
Wow, ACME Mapper is way more versatile, way slicker.
Image registration seems to be a problem with these mapping services though - they don't all display a given lat/long co-ordinate in the same place,
nor do they necessarily display a given GPS waypoint in the correct location.
But, generally, the supplied co-ordinates should get you close enough to locate what you're interested in.
- Apr 28, 2008:
- Added a new scheduled-release page:
- South Fork Feather - Below Forbestown Diversion Dam
- Apr 20, 2008:
- Stopped reporting flow information for the following California site:
- So. Yuba - At Kingvale Bridge
It has been replaced by the new So. Yuba - Near Cisco realtime gauge. If you want information on suitable stick gauge heights (near the put-in for the Summit run), see the online guides at
- Upper South Yuba - Summit Run
- Upper South Yuba - Spaulding Run
- Apr 18, 2008:
- Started reporting flows for the following new or changed California sites:
- So. Yuba - Near Cisco (new)
- Fordyce Creek - Below Fordyce Dam (changed)
- So. Yuba - At Lang Crossing (new)
- Bear - At Hwy 20 Bridge (new)
- Bear - Below Drum Afterbay (new)
Fordyce Creek - Below Fordyce Dam used to be a scheduled-release site, but is now a realtime site reporting gauge data.
Information for all of the above five sites is being provided by Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). This is to support boating flow studies, as a part of FERC relicensing.
- Apr 15, 2008:
- The old region/section
- California - West Slope
was getting way too unwieldy, so split it into two new ones:
- California - West Slope - Northern
- California - West Slope - Southern
- Apr 13, 2008:
- Dreamflows online reports now have two operating modes: all sections at once (the only mode available until now,
where the entire page is displayed all at once), and one section at a time (a new mode where only the currently-selected section/region is displayed).
An example of a section is California North Coast.
Pages using one section at a time are much smaller, therefore quicker to load and display on your browser.
This mode is primarily intended for visitors using a mobile device (e.g. cell-phone), where both bandwidth and memory tend to be an issue.
The downside of one section at a time is, naturally, that only one section is displayed, so displaying a different section requires a page reload.
The default mode is all sections at once for standard-format reports, and one section at a time for compact-format reports.
Links are provided for switching between modes.
This enhancement was made at the request of Mark D'Agostino.

- Big Sulphur Cr - Near Cloverdale
- Arroyo Mocho - Near Livermore
- Indian Creek - Below Indian Falls
- West Br Feather - At Whiskey Flat Bridge
- Mi. Cosumnes - At Mt Aukum Rd
- Tuolumne - Above Hetch Hetchy Res
Note 1: Ea. Russian - Above Lake Mendocino is a USGS realtime gauge. It replaces the old CDEC calculation of inflow to Lake Mendocino (previously reported on Dreamflows as Russian - Inflow Lake Mendocino).
Note 2: Dreamflows reported Indian Creek - Below Indian Falls briefly earlier this year as a NOAA/NWS site, and removed it since NWS's rating table of the time was pure fiction (yes, really). However, this is now a CDEC gauge with a proper rating table, so the reported flows should be good.
Note 3: Mi. Cosumnes - At Mt Aukum Rd is a CDEC gauge, and replaces the Dreamflows estimate at Mi. Cosumnes - At No. Fk. Confluence. The new flow site is at a different location though - it's near the put-in for the lower (usual) Middle Cosumnes run, whereas the old estimate was at the take-out.
Note 4: Tuolumne - Above Hetch Hetchy Res is a USGS realtime gauge. It replaces the old daily average inflow calculation (previously reported on Dreamflows as Tuolumne - In Hetch Hetchy Res).

- Smith - Steel Pipe At Gasquet
"Bearfoot" Brad Camden visits this unofficial gauge site (the twin brown steel pipes at the confluence of the North and Middle Forks of the Smith in Gasquet) each morning, and posts his findings on Dreamflows. Brad runs shuttles on the Smith; for more information visit his web page.
- Nov 25, 2007:
- Started reporting flows for the following new California/Oregon site:
- Klamath - Below J.C. Boyle Plant
and renamed the pre-existing Klamath - At J.C. Boyle Plant site to:
- Klamath - J.C. Boyle Schedule
Thus, Klamath - Below J.C. Boyle Plant is a gauge site reporting actual flow in the river, while Klamath - J.C. Boyle Schedule reports expected scheduled releases.
- Nov 5, 2007:
- Started reporting flows for the following new Oregon sites:
- No. Rogue - Above Lost Creek Lake (realtime gauge site replaces virtual site No. Rogue - Below North Fork Res)
- So. Rogue - Below Imnaha Creek
- Mi. Willamette - Below Hills Creek Res (realtime gauge site replaces the daily Mi. Willamette - Release Hills Creek Res)
- Row River - Above Dorena Lake (realtime site gauge replaces the daily Row River - Inflow Dorena Lake)
- Stopped reporting flows for the following Oregon sites:
- No. Rogue - Below North Fork Res (replaced by No. Rogue - Above Lost Creek Lake, see above)
- Mi. Willamette - Release Hills Creek Res (replaced by Mi. Willamette - Below Hills Creek Res, see above)
- Row River - Inflow Dorena Lake (replaced by Row River - Above Dorena Lake, see above)

- So. Coquille - At Powers (now reporting USGS instead of NOAA data; same data but more consistently reported)
- McKenzie - Below Trail Bridge Dam (now reporting USGS instead of NOAA data; same data but more consistently reported)
- Quartzville Cr - Near Cascadia (now reporting USGS instead of NOAA data; same data but more consistently reported)
- Clackamas - At Estacada (now reporting USGS instead of NOAA data; same data but more consistently reported)
- No. John Day - At Monument (previously an estimated flow site, now a USGS gauge site)
- Nov 1, 2007:
- Started reporting flows for the following new Idaho sites:
- Blackfoot - Near Shelley
- Camas Creek - Near Blaine
Re-ordered the Idaho flows page to follow the Snake from Wyoming to Washington, i.e. as it flows downstream.
The idea is to group physically close flow sites together on the report, in a reasonably logical way.
- Oct 27, 2007:
- Replaced the link to the current USBR PDF file for
- Trinity River Release Schedule
with a Dreamflows calendar-style page.
It's pretty boring right now since the current flow is 300 cfs all day every day, but it'll be more useful when the 2008 schedule is posted.
Also added a Historical Schedules section to the
- Schedules Page
and added the 2006 Tuolumne River - Release Holm Powerhouse schedule to it.
- Oct 26, 2007:
- Added the following rating tables (Bear - At Hwy 174 Bridge and So. Merced - At Wawona were added this week, the others a little while back):
- Indian Creek - Near Happy Camp
- No. Trinity - At Helena
- Trinity - At Cedar Flat
- Mi. Eel - Near Dos Rios
- Bear - At Hwy 174 Bridge
- So. Merced - At Wawona
- Oct 24, 2007:
- Started reporting flows again for the following California sites:
- So. Merced - At Wawona
- So. Merced - At Hwy 140 Bridge
Previously, So. Merced - At Wawona was reported as an estimate, but now it's an official CDEC gauge site.
Since So. Merced - At Hwy 140 Bridge is an estimate based on So. Merced - At Wawona, and since So. Merced - At Wawona is now a gauge, the So. Merced - At Hwy 140 Bridge estimate is much more reliable than previously.
- Aug 29, 2007:
- Started reporting flows for the following new California site:
- Piru Creek - Below Lake Piru
- Jul 26, 2007:
- Added a Search link to the header of every Dreamflows page. Clicking on this enables you to search the entire Dreamflows website (including Bulletin Board), using Google Custom Search.

- Added a guidebook entry for the following Oregon run:
- South Fork Rogue - Gorge Run
- Jul 10, 2007:
- Started publishing the Dreamflows Fantasy Flows page for California/Nevada. This page is a combination of reasonably reliable and predictable scheduled release information, and computer-modeled future flows - the latter being the reason for the name of the page.
- Jul 4, 2007:
- Created a NF Mokelumne Release Schedule page with 2007 scheduled release information.
- Jul 3, 2007:
- Added a glossary of river-running terms page. Most of the entries are serious, but some are just for fun.

Both reservoir outflow and elevation are reported, to help you estimate how much of a paddle out you're facing on the Lower "T".
- Jun 13, 2007:
- Started reporting flows for the following new Washington site:
- Joseph Creek - Near Mouth
- Jun 12, 2007:
- Started reporting flows for the following new California site:
- Eel - Inflow Van Arsdale
- Jun 7, 2007:
- The existing Dreamflows California site:
- Eel - Rel Lake Pillsbury
is now reporting the daily average outflow from Lake Pillsbury.
Note that this is the flow right below Lake Pillsbury - in winter, the flow on the Pillsbury run itself will likely be somewhat more than this, due to side-streams.
- Jun 7, 2007:
- Changed the way links from flow reports into the bulletin board are handled.
For instance, check the entries under the BBS heading in the realtime report.
The old icon and topic-count system has been largely replaced with the date of the most recent post for the given flow site.
For "recent" posts, the link is displayed as mon day in red, e.g. Jun 1.
For "older" posts, the link is displayed in blue or purple, depending on whether you've recently followed the link or not
(e.g. Jun 1 or Jun 1).
If the post is more than six months old, only the year is displayed, e.g. 2006.
For more detail, click on the BBS heading in one of the reports.

- May 1, 2007:
- Added Your name and Primary river interest fields to Dreamflows account profiles, so members can share this information if they wish.
- Apr 19, 2007:
- Where possible, for gaged flow sites like the No. American - Inflow Lake Clementine,
Dreamflows provides links to 4-day or 5-day agency-generated graphs, rather than drawing the graphs itself.
Not only does this help to keep down processing overhead, but their graphs present you with the most recent possible data.
Dreamflows is continuing this policy, but is now generating 30-day and 3-year graphs of its own.
The No. American - Inflow Lake Clementine graph shows how this works.
So far, only a few gaged flow sites offer 30-day and 3-year graphs, but in time all gaged flow sites will be upgraded.
- Apr 17, 2007:
- Added a 'Sticky' capability to the Bulletin Board.
When listing a forum, sticky topics are listed first.
This option is settable by the Admin only - to have a topic made sticky, contact chris@dreamflows.com
- Apr 2, 2007:
- Dreamflows has consolidated the Bulletin Board, Alerts and Reports Via Email (now called Email Reports) systems all under one login/username/password umbrella.

Each graph link is identified by the symbol.
- Aug 29, 2006:
- Added Daily Flows, Realtime Flows and Dreamflows Home links to the top of graphs generated by Dreamflows.

- Started reporting flows for the following new California site:
- Mi. San Joaquin - At Devil's Postpile
- Jul 31, 2006:
- Added model limit lines to those Dreamflows-generated graphs which are driven by statistical estimating models.
In general, such models are valid only between a range of flows.
The lo (brown) and hi (purple) model limit lines, respectively, show the lower and higher limits of the valid range.
Also, the "look" of the graphs has changed somewhat.

The symbol (on the cross-listing page) is a link to the rating table for that gauge.
Only those rating tables for flow sites which are currently being reported by Dreamflows are accessible from the cross-listing pages.
Obsolete ones (which may be useful to you since the gauges are obsolete and therefore not reported, but may still be physically present on the river)
are still accessible from the Whitewater Gauge Rating Tables page.
- Dec 30, 2005:
- Started reporting flows for the following new California site:
- So. Salmon - At Forks Of Salmon
Scott Harding observed that the existing "So. Salmon - Below Methodist Creek" estimate
reported by Dreamflows, which is based on historical USGS data, seems to always be lower than actual.
So, he has developed a formula for this new virtual gage located 6 miles downstream, at the South Fork bridge at Forks Of Salmon.
Note that this is a work in progress - the formula may well change as the season progresses.
- Dec 14, 2005:
- Regenerated the rating tables on the Dreamflows whitewater gauge rating tables page,
downloading new rating tables (where available) in the process.
The new format includes the rating table in numerical form.
- Dec 6, 2005:
- Stopped reporting flows for the following California sites (since gauge data is no longer available):
- No. Trinity - At Helena
- No. Eel - At Mina Bridge

you can report the river flow you believe you had on a run which was estimated by Dreamflows.
Also, added confidence information (for estimated flows) to the Dreamflows reports.
- Nov 9, 2005:
- Changed the formatting of the flow reports.
Previously, links weren't underlined (since this makes the text easier to read).
However, this caused confusion for visitors who are used to links' being underlined.
So, links are once more underlined.
This also paves the way for other changes coming soon.
- Oct 20, 2005:
- Stopped reporting flows for the following California sites (since the estimates are apparently too unreliable):
- Pit - Below Fall River Mills

reported the calculated total inflow to Pine Flat Reservoir, which included more than just the inflow
due to the Kings. Also, because the calculation was based on change in reservoir storage, it wasn't
very accurate and bounced around a lot. The new site reports the flow right above the reservoir
and is the flow on the Kings River only. Also, since it's a gauge, it's much more accurate.
